Originally founded in 1972, Atari was a pioneer in Arcade and Video Games during the 1970's and 1980's. Atari has changed ownership several times since its creation and is now owned by Atari, SA - the now operating name of Infogrames, who had success over the years publishing titles for Atari machines.
Through the 80's and 90's, Atari Consumer Electronics sold many home-entertainment and home-computer systems which had reasonable success, however due to financial issues the company was split and sold to Hasbro in 1998.
The most notable Atari hardware includes the Atari VCS or 2600, the Atari 400 & 800 home computer systems and the Atari ST family of computers. Atari achieved success in the music production industry with the Atari ST due to its built-in MIDI ports and backing from great music software that led to the Atari ST machines being used to produce many commercial music titles by well-known artists.
